Anna’s Story

‘The highest mountains are the hardest to climb but the view from the top is always worth it’

I was a new parent who didn’t have a clue

I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t know much about Autism until, I had a child who I suspected had autism at 14 months.

Google became my best friend and worst enemy as I drove myself insane with worry and compared Charlie to other children all the time - which worried me more.

I felt that I needed to distance myself from people with children of a similar age.

Since Charlie’s diagnosis

The day he was diagnosed, we were relieved to have the answers but felt utterly devastated. As I hoped I was wrong and felt so heartbroken that I had brought him into the world and his life was going to be a struggle.

I am not ashamed to admit I went to a very dark place at times from the ages of 14 months to 3 years of Charlie’s life.

The guilt I felt was horrible. Now I just feel sad that I spent so many days worrying instead of totally enjoying my beautiful boy.

Don’t get me wrong, Charlie has always given us so much joy but the fear of the unknown is a scary place. Especially when you are a fixer like me!

Anna’s Advice

Acceptance of things you can’t change and focusing on the things you can and the ability not to compare has set me free.

Enjoying the wins no matter how small and living for the day! Autism is part of the little boy we love so much, he wouldn’t be our Charlie if he didn’t have Autism. He is so inspiring!

We’ve asked questions, been to so many bloody courses and workshops, followed advice, surrounded ourselves with great friends, family and amazing professionals. Knowledge is power!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions it’s the only way we grow! I’m always happy to chat to anyone open to learn more about Autism, believe me I’m no expert but I love to talk about Autism if I can help someone to be more supportive, inclusive and understanding that’s what creates the waves of change!

Don’t hesitate to find the support you need.
